Gaa Gallery Provincetown is pleased to present Yellow Sea, a series of paintings by Sarah Kurz. This exhibition will run from August 26 to September 14. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, August 26 from 6 to 9pm.
To come face to face with the paintings of Sarah Kurz is to take pause. Her work asks the viewer to experience a series of moments abstracted from time and space. They access forgotten or imagined memories and transition into a lucid dreamscape where fact and fiction coalesce. Kurz’ semiotic explorations through the medium of painting disrupt the obvious associations of these images and seek a more nuanced meaning of what is being represented.
The sundry of images used in Kurz’ work come from regularly encountered sources such as, film, television, and the internet, as well as her personal images. This tapestry of source material allows Kurz to sift through and unlock the optic noise, transform it, and create a sensation that is both familiar and intimate. Kurz’ relationship with painting is a tactile one. Her deliberate and sensitive touch carries the lineage of contemporary figurative painters. The surface of her work reveals a great sense of care, with each brushstroke being a simultaneously intellectual and intuitive decision. This heightened awareness is equally as evident in the use of color where she employs the full range of her palette and the subtle shifts it allows. Her images are stunningly crisp yet retain a psychological haze.
Sarah Kurz (b. 1981) lives and works in New York, NY. Kurz received her BA from Columbia University and her MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Selected solo and group exhibitions include: Sargent's Daughters, New York; I-20 Gallery, New York; Allegra LaViola, New York; Samson Projects, Boston; Camponeschi, Rome; Geoffrey Young Gallery, Great Barrington, among others. Her work has been featured in Details Magazine, The New York Times, Artinfo.com, Flash Art and Art Critical. Recent honors and awards include visiting artist and guest lecturer at Cooper Union, NY; Kenyon College (Rome, Italy); Tyler School of Art (Rome, Italy); and a Joan Mitchell Grant to attend the Atlantic Center for the Arts Residency.
