Gaa Gallery Provincetown is honored to present The Nature of Language, a solo exhibition by Peter Hutchinson. This exhibition will run from August 5 through August 24. Please join us for an opening reception on Friday, August 5 from 6 - 9pm.
It is difficult to place a label on the artistic career of Peter Hutchinson that has now spanned over sixty years. He has been associated with a broad range of movements including land art, process art, post minimalism and even performance art. Today practitioners of conceptual art owe a paternal debt to Hutchinson. His practice and internationally meandering career has taken him from his native England to a myriad of locations. Existing as a constant traveler Hutchinson’s curiosity for travel and terrain has filled his career.
In The Nature of Language there is a duality inherent to these works as they operate as documents of ecological work and as primary photo-based Conceptual Art. Between text and image, the body and the landscape Hutchinson allows meaning to exist along the invisible borders of his work. This expansion of the works dichotomies allows for the contingency of unknown possibilities where we are invited to explore the simple ambiguities of the world Hutchinson creates.
Peter Hutchinson (b. London, England 1930) is a conceptual artist and pioneer of the Land Art movement. He has exhibited internationally and his work is held in public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, NY, NY, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, Musée d’Art Moderne Centre George Pompidou, Paris, France, The New Museum, New York, NY, and the Philadephia Museum of Art, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Netherlands. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Hutchinson lives and works in Provincetown, MA.
