Gaa Gallery Provincetown is pleased to present Alternative Desires, an exhibition of new works on paper from Gary Kuehn. Kuehn, a prominent figure of Process Art and Post-Minimalism, presents new work that toggles between the limitations and freedoms of form.

Alternative Desires is an investigative series, one that Kuehn completed over the course of 2017, when he made more than 150 drawings in his studio in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. These works all utilize a consistent monochromatic color application and a form-based schema: yellows, creams, and blues pulse within and spill outside of geometric forms. With this work, the sophisticated yield of the artist’s sustained attention, Kuehn presents a new variation of the philosophical questions he has investigated for more than four decades. Alternative Desires is an extended consideration of form and freedom, of the ways in which prescribed geometric arrangements and their respective implosions can both allow for occurrences of revelation.

Gary Kuehn lives and works in New York and Wellfleet. He participated in the groundbreaking exhibitions Eccentric Abstraction (1966), curated by Lucy Lippard, and When Attitudes Become Form (1969), curated by Harold Szeeman. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hamburger Bahnhof, and the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt, among others. Alternative Desires opens Friday, July 27, from 6-9pm at Gaa Gallery Provincetown, 494 Commercial Street.
