The pictures in Poppies, Sky, Water possess a quiet rhythmic tempo that exudes the environmental lightscapes in which they were created. Gail Marks’ work is inspired by nature and made through careful observation and by fully immersing herself in her subjects. Her prolific experimentation and her careful assessment of painting have allowed her to tackle everything from large-scale abstraction to the work currently on view. This freedom and care of approach and materiality are inherent to her process.
In Poppies, Sky, Water Marks ’acute observational studies are used as a beginning for finished studio pieces. After she has learned her subject, Marks gives herself the freedom to create loose and expressive images that allow color, light and space to take center stage. This meditative study of what is close at hand as well as what envelops seeks to study the sublime, both in the vastness of nature and in the studied quiet moments of the everyday. In the face of the current artistic climate's consistently large saccharin painting exhibitions Mark’s small quiet pieces are revolutionary. The strength of this show is in how and what she sees.
Gail Marks lives and works in NYC. Splitting her time between her New York studio and the expansive sensorial landscape of Cape Cod, she has had the opportunity to compile a body of work from a long career of painterly practice. She studied literature and art history at Smith College, Painting at Columbia University and the Art Students League. She has shown her work nationally and internationally, including il Biennale d’arte Contemporanea Oggiogno-Lago Maggiore, Italy. Her work is held in many private collections.
