ART COLOGNE
JULIA GARCÍA
NOVEMBER 6 - 9, 2025, 2025
COLOGNE, GERMANY
Gaa is delighted to present a new body of work by Julia García for the 2025 edition of Art Cologne.
Julia García (b. 1992, Pompano Beach, FL, USA) employs a collage-like application of acrylic and ink onto wet raw canvas, a process that reflects her upbringing near the Everglades, where the natural flow of the wetlands has been gradually shaped by urban development. This relationship between time, permeability, and the flow of matter is underpinned by the dominance of water’s role in García’s process. Acting as both medium and collaborator, water introduces an unpredictable external force that determines the outcome alongside the artist’s hand.
Working flat on the floor, García allows pigment to diffuse across the canvas, balancing control and spontaneity as the translucency of her materials records an unbroken sequence of gestures. Moving between painting and drawing, her practice is unified by a compositional tension between openness and resolution, information and exposure. Drawing from found 35mm slides and stock photography, García’s paintings—ranging from intimate domestic scenes to fabricated images of Americana—examine the interplay between memory, fantasy, and image circulation. Her figures and forms seem suspended between becoming and dissolving, evoking nostalgia, voyeurism, and the mutable nature of recollection.
García received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2014 and her MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2016. She had her first institutional solo exhibition in 2023 at NW9 in Cologne, Germany. Other solo exhibitions include Gaa, New York, NY; Galerie Fran Reus, Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Hair + Nails, Minneapolis, MN; KDR305, Miami, FL; and Night Club Gallery, St. Paul, MN. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at Timothy Taylor, New York, NY; O’Flaherty’s, New York, NY; Hair + Nails, Minneapolis, MN; Gaa, New York, NY; and Night Club Gallery, Minneapolis, MN. García lives and works in New York, NY.
