Gaa Gallery is pleased to present Quaquaversal, a group exhibition featuring works by Alyssa Klauer, Jane Margarette, Dan Schein, Johanna Robinson, Johanna Seidel, Malaika Temba, and Wendy White. Opening July 14th, the exhibition will be on view at the gallery’s New York location until August 25.

 

Derived from the Latin phrase quaqua versus meaning ‘turned in every direction,’ Quaquaversal explores the realms of dreams, delirium, and everyday life. Using nature, the human figure, and landscape as starting point, the works in the in Quaquaversal coalesce to form a mystical dystopia characterized by a notion of subtle absurdity and a particular surrealist quality. At times, there is an irresistible phantasmagoric quality present; at others, we encounter a darker territory inclined more towards the absurd. Reinventing common themes of modern art history and the mediums of painting and sculpture, the artists in Quauquaversal offer existential perspectives of circuitous and serpentine qualities of contemporary culture. 

 

The works speak of longing but are at once foreboding, exposing a mystical dystopia in all of its complexities and sensibilities. Together, these artists initiate a search for truth via the exploration of dreams and imagination.
